Swasth Report Of Haryana: The State Lags Behind Despite A Drop In Malnutrition, As Anaemia And Diarrhoea Cases Rise
Haryana was named as one of the best incremental performing states in Niti Aayog’s Health index report however the state’s performance in National Health and Family Survey 4 shows that it needs to work on bringing down instances of Anaemia and Diarrhoea cases
New Delhi: The northern state of Haryana was named as one of the three states to top the incremental performance, in the second edition of the central government’s think-tank Niti Aayog’s health index report. The report, titled ‘Healthy States, Progressive India – 2017-18’, looked at the overall performance and incremental improvement in the states and Union Territories from 2015-16 (base year) to 2017-18 (reference year) on 23 health indicators. Haryana was evaluated in the category of 21 larger states. Haryana’s overall performance index score increased from 46.97 to 53.51, an increase of 6.55 points, which is the highest in India, but its overall rank is 12 which was 13 earlier.
Here’s a look at Swasth Report of Haryana and its performance on health parameters:
- Infant Mortality Rate (IMR): The infant mortality rate in Haryana, according to National Family Health Survey (NFHS) 4 — per 1,000 live births was down by 21.42 per cent, from 42 per 1000 live births in NFHS-3 (2005-2006) to 33 per live births in NFHS-4 (2015-2016). This reduction in infant mortality rates in Haryana is less than the 28 percent reduction seen at an all India level.
- Under-Five Mortality Rate (U5MR): In NFHS 4, Haryana’s under-five mortality rate (U5MR) (children dying under the age of five) stood at 41 per 1000 live births, down from 52 per 1000 live birth (NFHS 3, 2005-06), which is about 21.1 per cent improvement. While in the same period at an all India level reduction in under-five mortality rate saw a drop of 32.4 percent.
- Malnutrition: At an all India level, while stunting (low height-for-age) came down by 38.4 percent between 2005 and 2015, according to NFHS 4, Haryana saw a drop of just 11.7 per cent from 45.7 per cent in the year 2005-06 to 34 per cent in 2015-16.
The state has also witnessed a 10.1 per cent decline in the cases of children under 5 years who are underweight, from 39.6 per cent (2005-06) to 29.4 per cent (2015-16), as per the NFHS 3 and 4, respectively. This is more than what overall country managed with just 6.7 percent reduction in cases of underweight children from 42.5 per cent (2005-06) to 35.8 per cent (2015-16). In terms of wasting (low weight-for-height), Haryana showed a minor increase of 2.1 per cent, which is slightly more than the 1.2 percent increase seen at an all India level. - Anaemia Among Children And Women: Haryana saw a negligible drop of 0.6 per cent in Anaemia cases for children from 72.3 percent IN 2005-06 to 71.7 per cent. When it comes to anameia among women aged 15-49, the state saw a rise of 6.6 percent from 56.1 per cent to 62.7 per cent in the same period. This is contrast to the overall country’s performance which saw drop in anaemia cases of 10.8 per cent among children and 2.2 per cent among women, as per NFHS 4 survey.
